History
Restaurant Mežiotojų
užeiga is located in the house No. 10, in Rotušės aikštė (Town-hall
Square). In the records of old-town explorers this building is called
Zabiela family house, because Zabiela family, wealthy citizens of
Kaunas, were one of the most famous of its owners through the 17th and 18th
centuries.
During the centuries not once the appearance of Zabiela family house has
changed and stood the test of Gothic, the Renaissance and the Classicism
epochs as well as modern times reconstruction.
Walls and windows overlooking the town hall of this monument of architecture
could tell us many interesting stories of history.
Antanas Baranauskas, the classic of the Lithuanian literature, also
lived in this house in the end of the 19th century.
It is known that the poet Adomas Mickevičius was a frequent visitor in this
house from 1819 to 1923. The reason for these visits was Karolina, a
beautiful wife of the doctor J. Kovalskis who lived in this house. The poet
felt in love with her and she saved Adomas in his hard times and inspired
him for life and creative work
In 1965 the restaurant Mežiotojų užeiga was opened in this house.
On the first floor of this restaurant decorated by hunting trophies and
hearths the Black and the White Banqueting Halls were equipped
